Logan Park Neighborhood Considers Merger

In the spring of 2022, Beltrami, Logan Park, Northeast Park, and St. Anthony East Neighborhood Associations created a committee to explore options for future collaboration.  With increased expectations from the city and anticipated funding decreases, our neighborhood organizations view collaboration as necessary to be sustainable and effective.

Each neighborhood is hosting a meeting in October 2022 to share a presentation and recommendation about what a merged organization looks like. Feel free to join any meeting to learn more.

LPNA Supports Northrup King Building Development

The Logan Park Neighborhood Board of Directors submitted a letter of support for the Northrup King Building Development. View the Northrup King Building Presentation.

Northrup King Residential Subdivision Project Plans

Northrup King Residential is an adaptive reuse project of historic industrial buildings located within the intersection of the Northeast Arts District and a historic industrial corridor. The project will redevelop three vacant buildings into 84 units of affordable housing, ranging from 30% – 80% AMI, for low-income artists and their families, and 8,120 square feet of commercial space for creative businesses. Unit mix includes 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units. Residential units will be designed with open layouts, durable surfaces, large doors, wide hallways and many with high ceilings and large windows to accommodate a variety of creative activities, all while preserving historic elements of the buildings. Units will be available to income-qualifying artists.

These buildings will require substantial renovation of windows, flooring, plumbing, electrical, heating, and elevators to be occupiable. Additional site work needs include environmental remediation, infrastructure improvements to the water and sewer utilities, and storm drainage systems for the parking lots. Project plans also include community gathering areas, outdoor programmable arts engagement, plaza and walking trails, pedestrian and bike connections, and child play areas. No new buildings will be constructed as a part of this development.

The six currently occupied buildings are home to over 300 artists, small businesses and non-profit organizations.  These buildings will be maintained as their current use. Three buildings on the northwest corner of the property are currently unoccupied. Artspace is exploring several light-industrial and creative sector uses for these buildings. Ultimately, Artspace plans to identify tenants with significant square footage needs (10,000sf+) to fully activate all floors and complement the improvements and activation elsewhere on the campus.

At the June 1, 2022 LPNA Board meeting, the LPNA Board voted to write a letter of support for the Earl Giles Distillery on Quincy Street

Earl Giles Support Letter from the LPNA Board of Directors:

Dear CPED,

Earl Giles Distillery is planning to open a distillery, bar, and event space during the summer of 2022.

We support Earl Giles efforts to open their business as planned in Logan Park Neighborhood.  The Earl Giles team began communicating with Logan Park in 2019 and most recently attended the LPNA Annual meeting in May of 2022.  Earl Giles Manager and Logan Park resident,  Aja Jones, has recently joined the LPNA board.

We acknowledge their willingness to engage the neighborhood and appreciate that their operating hours are within an appropriate range.  Earl Giles does not face any residential buildings and management expressed a commitment to noise management.

We appreciate our new partnership with Earl Giles and look forward to future opportunities to partner on Quincy and Monroe Street improvements.

Sincerely,
Logan Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors

Mural Celebration Event November 6, 2021

Mural Celebration Event
New murals are complete at Beltrami Park, Logan Park, and Northeast Park! Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), BNC, LPNA, NEPNA, and your Northeast neighbors and public art appreciators for a Grand Unveiling Event at Northeast Park on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2-4 pm!

The event will feature live music, entertainment, food, and drink for everyone to enjoy!  The celebration will be held next to the mural painted on the exterior of the restroom building along 14th Avenue NE, between Pierce and Buchanan Streets NE.

About the Murals

The murals were designed and painted by Northeast Minneapolis-based Creatives After Curfew. Artists include Maiya Lea Hartman, Leslie Barlow, Maria Robinson, Clau Valentino, Silent Fox, Thomasina Topbear (City Mischief), with coordination by Taylan De Johnette and Tricia Heuring.

Details were based on community engagement done by the artists and neighborhood organizations. Each mural highlights people, diversity, equity and inclusion in Northeast Minneapolis, while reflecting the identity, personality and uniqueness of each neighborhood. MPRB staff applied an anti-graffiti coating on top of the murals after they were completed.

Logan Park mural is located on the south-facing wall of Logan Recreation Center. Sponsored, funded and maintained by Logan Park Neighborhood Association.

Beltrami Park mural is located on the north-facing wall of the main park building, next to the playground and wading pool. Sponsored, funded and maintained by Beltrami Neighborhood Council.

Northeast Athletic Field Park mural is located on the restroom building just north of 14th Avenue NE, between two baseball fields. The design wraps around all four exterior walls. Sponsored, funded and maintained by Northeast Park Neighborhood Association.

There’s A New Performance Pavilion in the Park!

There’s A New Performance Pavilion in the Park!
If you’ve been by Logan Park recently, you’ve noticed something different: a brand-new performance pavilion! The pavilion has been three years in the making, and on Sunday, August 22, 2021 volunteers from the neighborhood, Spark-Y, and members of the Edison High School football team came together to help hoist the massive timbers into place. The timber framed structure will provide space for outdoor gatherings as well as stage performances in the park. Participants and spectators for the many athletic events and activities in Logan Park will also be able to enjoy the pavilion as a gathering area.

Funding for the pavilion was provided by NRP funds, Elim Church, People for Parks, local businesses, and individual donations. This project would not have been possible without numerous, dedicated volunteers and the following community partners: Clark Bremer, Jon Duesman (MPRB), Carrie Christensen (MPRB), Pat Vogel, Mike Ferrin, Kevin Reich,  Mike Vennewitz, Spark-Y Youth Labs (Miranda Wood, Tatiana Hakanson, Sam Menzies), David Salzar and the Edison Football Team. Additional recognition to be made in the October 2021 newsletter.

We are still accepting donations (any amount helps) to help offset the increased costs.
LPNA is a 501c3. Donations are tax-deductible.
